Must see : Brilliant clay animation series by Aardman for Animal Planet.
Cheenti Cheenti Bang Bang - An interesting premise and a promising film!
A war between Red and Black Ants makes for a very interesting premise for an animated feature. Cheenti Cheenti Bang Bang is a 82 min long being produced jointly by Elecom Animation Academy, a Kolkata-based animation training institute, and Mumbai’s Fiesta Entertainment and will be released in May this year.
SEE THE TRAILER
The name of the film is a clever play on words (an ant is called a Cheenti in Hindi) and has absolutely nothing to do with the 1964 Ian Fleming book - Chitty Chitty Bang Bang or the 1968 film by the same name. It is actually based on ‘Lal Kalo’ (Red Black), a popular Bengali children’s novel by Girindrashekhar Basu.
Bringing Robots To Life… the ILM way!
I just received an email from Lucasfilm Animation Singapore, which has a center in Hyderabad in India, about a session with ILM Artist - Nigel Sumner, that they are organizing. Though the only details they have provided are the date (11th May), time (2 pm to 5:30 pm) and speaker (Nigel Sumner), once we have more info, it will be uploaded here on the website.
You can register online by going to: lasjedi.com/events Though entry is free, there is limited seating so if you want to attend, you better hurry up!
Nigel Sumner has worked on numerous Hollywood films as Sequence Supervisor and from the poster, I am assuming that he will be talking about his work on the Hollywood VFX-rich film, - Transformers.
To know more about Nigel Sumner, you can read this interview from ILMfan.com (It’s an old interview but it should help you get some idea about the speaker and his past work): Read the interview.
Discovery of the week: “Forget the films, watch the trailers!”
Submarinechannel.com is a very interesting website that I happened to stumble upon…
“Forget the films, Watch the titles”
This site showcases some very well crafted title sequences for films and TV shows. Classified into 4 categories - Animation, Motion Graphics, Mixed Media and 3D, it has some popular film titles (Pink Panther, Juno) as well as some which we haven’t seen before in India. The site was set up in 1997 as an online collection of some of the most brilliant and eye-catching title sequences made for mainstream as well as independent films. On the FAQs on their website, they tell us WHY they are doing this…
“Because we love a good title sequence, because we’re into innovative motion graphics, because we can… Femke Wolting, founder of Submarine Channel, curated a program for the International Film Festival Rotterdam several years ago where she showed a selection of the best title sequence designs. That program was called ‘Forget the Film, Watch the Titles’. SubmarineChannel editor Remco Vlaanderen has been collecting and researching title sequences for several years. We’re quite passionate about the subject! “
Worth viewing for sure! Check it out…

Mahabharata goes Manga!
After the Ramayana, now it is the turn of the other Indian epic - the Mahabharata to be reborn as Japanese Manga. Hyderabad based Panel Studios is coming out with a 90 minute long feature film called Little Pandavas and they seem to have effectively used the Manga illustrative style for the characters. The film has been directed by Rudra Matsa, the Founder of Panel Studios, who has also written the story for the film. The Animation director is Charan Reddy Desai. Character designs have been created by Rudra Matsa and Charan Reddy Desai and the backgrounds by N. Pawan Chandra. The film is being produced by Nitin Sidamsetty and Rudra Matsa.
You can see the character designs, download wallpapers and view a lot of the pre-production material on the Little Pandavas website.
Panel Studios also launched Panel Comix recently and will be publishing comics based on the Little Pandavas series. Check out the pictures and click them to view a bigger image. Read the complete article here.

“With an intriguing storyline, endearing lead characters, adventure, humour, music and fun, the feature-length animated film ‘Kutti Chetan and his Friends’ seems to have got what it takes to challenge the mythological heroes currently ruling the Indian animation scene.”
- from “Will Kutti Chetan and Friends dethrone our Screen Gods?” 18th Nov. 2007 (Read the complete post…)
In November last year, this is what we had to say about a promising new Indian animation studio DREAMS and the animated film - Kutti Chetan and his Friends that is being produced by them.

The film is now at the production stage, with teams working in Manila (Philippines) and Shanghai (China). Going by their current estimate, it looks like they will be able to meet their December 2008 deadline.
Dhimant Vyas and the ‘making of TZP clay animation’ on CNN IBN!
Taare Zameen Par has not only caught the fancy of the nation as a warm and touching film, but its clay animation sequence has enthralled audiences as well. After we featured the making of the TZP clay animation on the AAA blog (see here), others have followed suit, including Indiafm.com and now CNN IBN.
Last night, CNN IBN had a special interview with Dhimant Vyas and it will be screened today as well at 2:30 pm IST on the CNN IBN channel. Dhimant certainly deserves the accolades he is receiving for this mini-masterpiece that kids and adults alike have found fascinating. Here is the link to the CNN IBN video interview:
